Depreciation Schedule

To be honest, this lesson is new to me.  I never had this when I was in high school but well...maybe it was never really part of the curriculum back then.  I'm glad we're having it now.

I learned that Depreciation is also a part in the accounting system since it deals with expenses and allowances.  Allowance for depreciation is a reserve account while the depreciation expense is an operating and necessary expenditure of a business entity.

*Depreciation allowance, which is charged off from the value of a property, may be deducted from gross income.

Depreciation is a way to know the lifespan of a certain equipment or property.  It is useful to businessmen, especially those who own factories, since the majority of their properties are machines.  Machines are what produces the products they sell and therefore, it plays an important role in the company.

Now that I have a knowledge about this, no matter how simple, I am quite satisfied to be able to learn about it.  I may even have use for it in the future if I'm going to have a business that will require mass production.  :)

Here is a little example of Depreciation:

Bank Reconciliation

If the first lesson was about Profit and Loss, just last Friday we discussed about "Bank Reconciliation". Many people, especially those who are involved in business, are aware of this process concerning their bank's monthly report.

This monthly report is critical and important.  This is where the cheques being issued daily by entrepreneurs are monitored.  Their deposits and releases of cheques are recorded for updates and changes.

The "Reconciliation statement" in this process refers to the agreement about the bank statement balance and the cheque book balance.  It is important for it keeps the company's financial statements clear and up to date.  Through this, the business owner will have the knowledge of how well his company is doing or how much it is lacking in success.

Since my mom have worked in a bank as an executive accountant before concentrating on being a freelance lawyer, I was taught of these things back in high school.  We have small businesses as well and we are currently being guided towards managing these in the future (together with my brother).

Having this lesson actually makes me happy for it gives me a background of the things that I need to be learning.

Profit and Loss

Last week, we just started our lessons in Business Math.  For me, I consider this subject valuable not only because it is required to be tackled at school but for the reason that I'm planning to start my own business in the future.  Yes, building up my own business has been part of the list in my life goals.  And if I want to become successful with it, I would definitely make use of my learnings from school.

Back to the topic; the first lesson we were taught was about profit and loss.  If you may be aware of it or not, knowing of the profit and loss is very crucial when it comes to business.  That is why business owners either have book keepers (for small businesses) or accountants (for big corporations) by their sides.  It is so that they are always informed of how their company is faring compared to competitors.  With this they become conscious of the market changes and sudden complications that may affect their company.

As far as I remember, crunching numbers or adoring them at some certain point has never lingered in my everyday school life.  But back in high school, I have to admit (even if I'm not one of the smartest in math subjects) that I also enjoyed dealing with formulas and solving problems.  It is not my strong point in mathematics, but I always liked the challenge of analyzing problems.
I had difficulties with it though, but I would never admit it to myself.  But now that I'm in college and my course does not "actually" include math subjects on a quarterly basis, I would surely want to be good at what I am supposed to learn.
